AVIA through CAP joined the global fight against content theft with a specific focus on illicit streaming devices (ISDs) and apps, which facilitate the massive piracy of movies, sports, TV series and other creative video content.  CAP, who warn against the risks consumers face when accessing piracy websites and applications.

Neil Gane, CAP General Manager, said the coalition recognizes the efforts being undertaken by Globe against websites that illegally distribute copy-righted content online. “We are behind Globe in their #PlayItRight campaign that educates the video-consuming public that may patronize piracy websites in the Philippines without knowing the harm they can cause. The damage that content theft does to the creative industries is without dispute. However, the damage done to consumers themselves, because of the nexus between content piracy and malware, is only beginning to be recognized,” Gane added.

Ernest L. Cu, Globe President and CEO, said that the support of international groups like CAP reinforces its stronger stance against illegal sites including online piracy. “This advocacy helps protect our customers from malware and the dangers of illegal content online. In partnership with the CAP, we will be able to acquire technical and regulatory know-how in combating piracy in line with other developed countries.”

Gane said CAP will collaborate with Globe by sharing relevant data and information that can strengthen the information campaign against illegal online distribution of copyrighted content in the Philippines.

Louis Boswell, the CEO of AVIA, said, “The illicit streaming device (ISD) ecosystem is impacting all businesses involved in the production and distribution of legitimate content. That is why content producers, distributors and content platforms have come together to form CAP and combat this threat to their industry.”

CAP members include leading video content creators and distributors in Asia such as beIN Sports, Casbaa, Discovery, The Walt Disney Company, Fox Networks Group, HBO Asia, NBCUniversal, Premier League, Turner Asia-Pacific, A&E Networks, Astro, BBC Worldwide, CANAL+, Cignal, La Liga, Media Partners Asia, National Basketball Association, PCCW Media, Singtel, Sony Pictures Television Networks Asia, TVB, True Visions, TV5MONDE, and Viacom International Media Networks.

CAP’s primary mission is to bring leading video content creators and distributors’ members together to join the global fight against content theft.  The sale of ISDs does great harm to the content creation and distribution industries in Asia, as well as the millions of people who work in the creative economy around the world.

In 2017, the Globe launched the #PlayItRight advocacy to help the entertainment industry curb piracy and protect intellectual property rights. The company earlier announced that it has blocked nearly 2,500 illegal sites that carried child pornography.
