Startup Weekend aims to inspire women and diversify tech industry

This year’s Startup Weekend Cebu happening on September 28 – 30, 2018 was organized to inspire and empower women.

Dubbed as a ‘Startup Weekend Cebu Women Edition’, around 60 women professionals are expected to participate in the business pitch event. To be held at The Inspire Team Space, Level 8, Mabuhay Towers, Cebu IT Park, the three-day ideation, mentorship, and presentation program is the 7th Startup Weekend in Cebu City and the second Women Edition in the Philippines. Local women mentors such as Frances Teves, Desiree Roxas, Ezra Gayon, Lorna Bondoc, Timmy de Jesus, Laurice Chiongbian, Dan Allen Pantinople, Rochel Abrasaldo will be coaching the participants.

“It only makes sense that Cebu – a cradle of talent, ideas, and entrepreneurs – participates in this movement. This Startup Weekend edition is special because this is focused on women, with the goal of inspiring female leaders to develop an interest in technology, design thinking, and/or entrepreneurship towards transformational change,” said Mary Grace T. Quidet, Lead Organizer of Startup Weekend Cebu Women Edition.

Startup Weekend is a 54-hour event where designers, developers, marketers, and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, and launch startups. It is part of the Startup Weekend events by Techstars held across cities in Asia Pacific during the month of September, all focused on engaging and celebrating women, diversity, and inclusion in local communities.

“Currently, there are a lack of female role models in the tech field, gender bias in the workplace, unequal growth opportunities, and unequal pay for the same skills. We are hoping to help promote a culture that does not make women feel like they have to prove themselves,” said Quidet.

There is a registration fee of PHP 1,000.00, inclusive of six meals, an event shirt, and event goodie bags. “Aside from the freebies the participants would be receiving, they will go home with the experience of understanding what it takes to create a validated solution to a community problem, work on a business model, and come up with a Minimum Viable Product over one weekend,” said Quidet.

The event is sponsored by the supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem of the country with businesses and institutions like the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Filipino Homes, Google Business Group-Cebu, The Inspire Team, Symph, Ideaspace Foundation, The Company Cebu, Micab, Payruler, Happy Webs, PRWorks, Yoveo
