Because of the very recent International Yoga Day that happened on June 21, I decided to create a fun article showcasing ten of the strangest yoga poses I’ve come across.
The yoga poses featured here are more challenging and can only be successfully performed by an experienced yogi (someone who practices yoga with a high level of commitment). Although these positions are difficult to master, they can be quite entertaining to look at—the human body can do wonderful things! If you’ve been doing yoga for a while now though, maybe you are determined, confident, and even capable enough of executing the following poses. On the other hand, if you have zero to little experience with yoga, it is still interesting to see what the human body is capable of doing. *Photos used in this article are not the property of Escooped but are the images of their respectful owners.
- Tittibhasana B also known as insect posture – this posture focuses primarily on the back. It incorporates backbends and extreme hip openers. By focusing on these two parts, it causes the base of the spine to feel relief.

- Yoganidrasana also known as sleeping yogi pose – this pose is one that targets the spine and hamstrings while remaining in a reclined position.

- Chakra bandhasana also known as deep backbends – this pose is the ultimate backbend which is great for spinal health. It is the key to a healthy body and mind.

- Vrschikasana also known as scorpion pose – this pose is another challenging pose that involves strengthening the shoulders, back and legs.

- Mayurasana also known as peacock pose – this posture tones up the abdominal portion of the body. It also strengthens the forearms, wrists and elbows.

- Urdhva Prasarita Eka Padasana also known as standing split – this pose requires good flexibility and strength. It helps strengthen the whole lower body and even lengthens the muscles of the legs, focusing more on the calves and hamstrings.

- Eka Hasta Vrksasana also known as one handed tree pose – this one is basically a one handed handstand!

- Astavakrasana also known as 8-Angle Pose – for this pose you need equal parts flexibility and strength. Your core will fire up as you attempt this difficult asymmetrical arm balance.

- Ardha-Chandrasana also known as half-moon back bend – this posture warms up your spine and activates the central nervous system.

- Eka Pada Galavasana also known as flying pigeon – this pose is an intermediate arm balance pose and is the final contender on our list of 10 Strangest Yoga Poses.
Did you know that International Yoga Day was officially set thanks to Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014?
He stated that “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition . It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. ” Since then, many have been participating and spreading the love of Yoga.
For me, I became intrigued by this fitness style because of the recent yoga event at Anytime Fitness Cebu Business Park. In celebration of Yoga Day, they hosted a class where their experienced yoga tainers shared their knowledge about the discipline. It got me curious as to what other postures are possible.
