In Lapu-Lapu City, the guitar-making business began when the Spanish friars assigned in Cebu needed to fix the guitars they were using. Instead of setting for the guitars to arrive from Mexico, they hired Opon village townspeople in Mactan Island to make new guitars and adjust the existing guitars they had; hence, they started the guitar industry in Cebu.
FERANGELI GUITAR HANDCRAFTER
Behind the success of Ferangali Guitar Handcrafter is Fernando A. Dagoc, or Andoy as locals may call him, the head luthier of Ferangali Guitar Handcrafter. In his journey of becoming the head luthier, he was first trained by his uncle at a young age to make guitars by hand. Before prioritizing guitar-making, his wide knowledge with wood comes from his experience as a wood agent. He then gave up his profession of being a wood agent to focus on his passion of guitar-making.
Common woods used for Cebu hand-made guitars are soft and hardwoods like Jackfruit, Narra, black wood ebony, and a number of imported woods. Some guitars have plain designs, while others have details of intricate patterns or are inlaid with shell crafts.
