Andre Judiel Parabas of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) has won the 10th edition of the Jumpthegap® Roca international design competition for his low-cost and biodegradable urine rapid-testing kit. His winning design was chosen from over 2,000 entries from 102 countries in this year’s design competition.
First Prize in Wellness and Health Category

On October 2021, Andre Parabas was awarded first prize in this year’s global tilt under the Well-being and Health category with his device P- Kit. The “Parabas P-Kit” is a low-cost, biodegradable urine testing kit with a universal toilet seat cover that aids in a contactless and hygienic urine sample for use in any bathroom space. The device can identify diseases like diabetes, urinary infections, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), malaria, and pneumonia.

According to Andre, his motivation for working on this winning entry is to provide a solution to the market’s growing demand for accessible and cheap health-monitoring kits.
“I started working on my entry 3 months ago, and I had 3 other concepts before I came up with my entry. My previous concepts were all avant-garde bathroom products that I know answers the competition briefly, but I did not feel like those products could be used by people in developing countries where access to proper healthcare, sanitation and hygiene is scarce,” Andre stated on his facebook post.
Jumpthegap® Sustainability Winner Andre Judiel Parabas
This year’s Jumpthegap® marks a turning point in the evolution of Roca’s international design competition. The competition suggests a new way of looking at the future, inspired by the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’s cross-cutting problems in the areas of healthcare and hygiene, environmental preservation, diversity, and fair access to technological advancements.
The competition has been organized into four categories to embrace all aspects of sustainability connected to the bathroom space: Wellness and Health, [Un]neutral Design, Water and Energy, and Crisis and Emergency.
If you want to inspire more Filipinos, you should share your ideas with the rest of the world. Jumpthegap®, Roca’s International is seeking to promote the creativity and talent of students and professionals.
