[Cebu City] March 22, 2022— On January 18, 2022, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced Butuan City, Philippines as among the 15 winning cities of the 2021-2022 Global Mayors Challenge.
They picked the winners of the 2021 Global Mayors Challenge from among 631 applicant cities for their work in creating urban innovations amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
They awarded each city $1 million or the equivalent of P51,278,000, in addition to providing technical support and coaching over three years for the implementation of their ideas.
The winning proposal of the city is “AgriBOOST,” it’s an agribusiness model innovation that improves and increases the agricultural market by providing farmers predictive data to make decisions about the kind and numbers of crops to plant.
Butuan’s Mayor Ronnie Vicente ‘RCL’ C. Lagnada welcomed the award by stating, “We deeply honor, feel inspired, and are excited about Bloomberg Philanthropies’ great recognition of AgriBoost as a breakthrough innovative response to the challenges of the pandemic.”
The Mayors Challenge 2021 was the first to take on a global reach. The New York City-based Bloomberg Philanthropies aims to improve the lives of millions of people in over 170 countries through education, arts, the environment, public health, as well as government innovation.
