[Cebu City] May 17, 2022— DOH, Filipino innovators, and Philippine-based organizations have won the first World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Innovation Challenge: Innovation for the Future of Public Health.
Six public health innovations from the Philippines were recognized in the competition’s inaugural season, which chose 29 winning ideas from 400 applications.
Among the country’s winners, including a vaccine management system, non-electric water pumps, a post-super typhoon Haiyan disease prevention, and control program, a tele-contact investigation, and tuberculosis (TB) prevention project, a stress management program, and a COVID-19 AI chatbot.
The winners of the WHO’s Western Pacific Innovation Challenge this year presented their ideas during the 2022 Western Pacific Innovation Forum: Scaling for Impact, which took place on April 28 and 29, 2022.
AHA! Behavioral Design
AHA! is the Philippines’ first behavioral design company, combining science, creativity, and communication to encourage beneficial habits in people’s personal and professional life. In collaboration with the Philippine Department of Health, they created “Address the Stress,” a behavioral program targeted at promoting and improving the mental and emotional well-being of public health professionals in the Philippines.
AI4 GOV, in collaboration with the Department of Health, was awarded for its innovation called the “KontraCOVIDbot,” which empowers individuals and governments through an AI-powered chatbot that answers COVID-related questions.
Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation, Inc. (AIDFI)
Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation is a non-governmental organization based in the Philippines that focuses on technical innovation, social business, and community development to benefit the poorest rural areas. “The Only Way is Up: Pumping Water Uphill and Changing Lives,” their winning innovation, is a system that pumps water from lower to higher altitudes without the need for energy or fuel.
CP Health Innovations Inc. (CareGoEMR)
CP Health Innovations Inc. (CareGoEMR) strives to be a partner to our health professionals on the ground in all areas of health. Their winning innovation is focusing on co-developing healthcare innovation with rural communities in the Philippines, as well as a vaccine management and SMS notification service.
FHI 360 (TB Innovations and Health Systems Strengthening Project)
TB Innovations and Health System Strengthening (TB Innovations) is a five-year initiative aimed at bringing a dynamic and strategic approach to the Philippines’ tuberculosis (TB) battle. “Tele-contact investigation and tuberculosis (TB) prevention during COVID-19, employing mathematical modeling to enhance participatory government in the Philippines,” is the winning innovation.
Health Futures Foundation, Inc.
Health Futures Foundation, Inc. (HFI) is a non-profit organization in the Philippines that manages health and social development projects for marginalized communities. Their winning innovation is called the “Post-Haiyan Integrated Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Program in Salcedo, Eastern Samar.”
The WHO’s Western Pacific Innovation Challenge seeks to enhance people’s overall health through integrating innovation and organizational structure, as well as empowering sustainable routes to better health in the area.
