[Cebu City] June 10, 2022— Joshua Mahilum, the son of a sidewalk vendor and a tricycle driver, graduated from the University of St. La Salle (USLS) in Bacolod City with a degree in chemical engineering.
A 22 year-old, Joshua Mahilum is a scholar of USLS and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
On May 29, 2022, he received a certificate of being an Outstanding Student of the College of Engineering and Technology.
Mahilum has always been an honor student, graduating as class salutatorian from the Vista Alegre-Granada Relocation Elementary School in Bacolod and then ending with high honors in the Top 20 of his class at the Liceo-De La Salle Senior High School (SHS).

Mahilum recently shared his college experience on social media as a homage to his parents, who encouraged him to pursue his aspirations.
“SON OF SIDEWALK VENDOR AND TRICYCLE DRIVER GRADUATES FROM COLLEGE,” Joshua Mahilum wrote in a Facebook post on May 29, 2022.
“If I would be the one to write an article about this momentous day in my life, this would be the headline,” Mahilum explained.
Joshua Mahilum said that he was able to complete college owing to multiple scholarships from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and USLS. He also earned a monthly allowance, which he utilized to cover his education expenses and assist his mother in running the store.
“My story as a beneficiary of several scholarships is a testament that yes, definitely, there is a way. There is hope. You can, even if you are poor, and that your situation now is temporary,” Mahilum added.
Mahilum hopes that by sharing his experience, others in similar situations would be inspired to work hard and achieve their goals despite the obstacles.
