Jollibee’s Chickenjoy won the hearts of the staff of a popular American food website and named as the “Best Fast-Food Fried Chicken” in the USA.
The staff of the American Food website Eater, after following four rounds of competition in four categories that featured 16 fried chicken brands, determined that the Chickenjoy the finest of all the different kinds of fried chicken they had tried. However, it was admittedly a subjective taste test with “no criterion” of evaluating other than to “follow their hearts.”
The last round included a matchup between the Philippines and South Korea. In a round of 16 that soon moved into the knockout stages, resulting in the final two “dark horses.”
It’s interesting to mention that throughout the competition, American food giants including McDonald’s, KFC, Popeyes, Burger King, Wendy’s, Wingstop, Shake Shack, and Panda Express were pitted against the two non-American finalists.
Bones, No Bones, Sandwiched, and Sauced were the categories. No brands from the same category allowed to appear more than once in the challenge. The Bonchon, classified with the Sauced category, while the Chickenjoy placed in the Bones category.
Lesley Suter Statement on the “Best Fast-Food Fried Chicken”
The final choice was made in favor of Lesley Suter, the special projects editor at Eater, who was recognized for having “masterminded scores of fried chicken tales.”
Suter said that despite living a block from a Jollibee store. She has never even eaten there in the six years since it first opened.
“If loosely attached in a way that allows an entire hunk to slide off with one bite, the lightly spiced skin is as tectonically crunchy as advertised, ” she said.
“But the chicken itself was the true surprise here. Satisfyingly light, delicious in a way that tastes like chicken, and incredibly juicy, “she added.
Suter also gave high marks for the gravy at Jollibee. Saying that it “completes the dish, proudly showing its Filipino colors with a substantial amount of sugar.”
Jollibee, which now has 83 locations in North America and more than 1,500 restaurants worldwide, aims to expand to 500 locations in the United States and Canada within the next five to seven years. Now, the Jollibee Group hopes to rank among the top five restaurant businesses worldwide.
