Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Filipino soldiers who fought alongside Korean forces during the Korean War in the 1950s. At a reception commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Korea, Ban highlighted the valiant efforts of the 7,420 Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea soldiers.

According to The Philippine Star, Ban expressed his admiration for the courage displayed by these young Filipinos, many of whom embarked on a journey to Korea to defend freedom, despite possibly having little prior knowledge of the country. He underscored their selfless commitment to the cause of liberty.

The reception, marking the beginning of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Korea, served as a platform to honor the enduring partnership and cooperation between the two nations since 1949. Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo emphasized the significance of this milestone and expressed optimism for future collaboration that would benefit both countries and their people.

Philippine Ambassador Theresa Dizon-De Vega highlighted the historical ties between the two countries, dating back even before the formal establishment of diplomatic relations. She recounted the story of Moon Soon-deuk, a Korean maritime figure who learned the Filipino language and served as an interpreter for Filipino shipwreck survivors off the coast of Jeju Island in 1801, showcasing the longstanding cultural exchanges between the Philippines and Korea.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Foreign Ministry Director-General for ASEAN Kim Dong-bae emphasized the shared commitment of both nations to elevate their bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership in the near future. He expressed the mutual expectation for this enhanced partnership to materialize expeditiously, reflecting a deeper and more strategic engagement between the Philippines and Korea.

As both countries embark on the next 75 years of diplomatic relations, the foundation of shared sacrifices, historical connections, and mutual respect will serve as the cornerstone for further collaboration and cooperation.
