Taekwondo Hopefuls Mangin and Alcantara Miss Out on Paris Olympics Berths

Tachiana Mangin and Arven Alcantara faced setbacks in their quest for Olympic berths at the Asian Taekwondo Qualification Tournament in Tai’a, China.

Tachiana Mangin’s Journey

According to Manila Bulletin, Mangin fell short in the women’s -49kg category, losing to Saudi Arabia’s Dunya Abutaleb in the semifinals and later to Ruka Okamoto of Japan in the bronze medal match. Despite her defeat, Mangin displayed resilience, defeating tough opponents like Truong Thi Kim Tuyen of Vietnam and Ni Kadek Heni Prikasih.

Arven Alcantara’s Performance

Alcantara’s bid ended in the men’s -68kg quarterfinals after a loss to Ali Reza Abbasi of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team. While Alcantara showed promise with a strong Round of 16 performance against Syrian Nouraldin Jaidani, he couldn’t sustain his momentum.

Road to Paris Olympics

Only the top two athletes in each weight division secure tickets to the Paris Olympics, leaving Mangin and Alcantara out of contention. Filipino Taekwondo Hopefuls: Kurt Barbosa and Baby Jessica Canabal are among the Filipino athletes vying for spots in Paris, competing in the men’s -58kg and women’s -57kg categories, respectively. Additionally, Allain Keanu Ganapin seeks a Paralympic berth in the K44 men’s -80kg category, showcasing the Philippines’ diverse talent pool in Taekwondo.

Despite their efforts, Mangin and Alcantara fell short in their Paris Olympics bids. However, their determination and resilience serve as inspiration for Filipino Taekwondo hopefuls aiming to represent the country on the global stage. With other Filipino athletes still in contention, the Philippines remains hopeful for success in Taekwondo at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics.
