Philippines Claims Silver in Women’s Asia & Oceania Ice Hockey Tournament

Ice Hockey

The Philippine women’s ice hockey team displayed a commendable performance in their return to the ice, securing the silver medal in the 2024 IIHF Women’s Asia & Oceania Cup held in Kyrgyzstan over the past weekend. Despite falling short of the gold, their runner-up finish underscores their resilience and determination. Here are some details according to the report of The Philippine Star.

A Hard-Fought Journey

Competing in a round-robin format, the Philippines faced tough opposition throughout the tournament. Their quest for the gold culminated in a showdown against Iran, where they ultimately succumbed to a 0-4 defeat in the championship match held at the Bishkek Arena on Saturday evening.

The silver medal marks a significant achievement for the Philippine team, considering it was their first tournament appearance since the onset of the pandemic. Their stellar performance harks back to their triumph in 2019 when they clinched the Division 1 title in the Challenge Cup of Asia, highlighting their enduring prowess in the sport.

Notable Performances

Prior to their encounter with Iran, the Philippines demonstrated their mettle by securing victories in their first three matches. Despite their loss in the final, they showcased commendable defensive skills, limiting Iran to their lowest goal-scoring output of the tournament. Filipina goalkeeper Rosalyn Lim’s outstanding performance, making 34 saves out of Iran’s 38 attempts on goal, was a testament to the team’s resilience and determination.

While the gold eluded them this time, the Philippines’ silver medal finish serves as a testament to their potential and sets a solid foundation for future success in international competitions. With their unwavering commitment and skillful play, the team has undoubtedly earned recognition and admiration on the global stage.
