History enthusiasts have something to look forward to in Cebu. The Mactan World Museum, a modern and ambitious project valued at P1.2 billion, is set to open within the next three years, developer Megaworld announced on April 25. This sprawling 30-hectare museum will be located in The Mactan Newtown township in Lapu-Lapu City, promising to become a major cultural landmark.

Exploring Filipino-Spanish History

The Mactan World Museum aims to explore the rich history of the Philippines and its centuries-long cultural ties with Spain. The museum’s exhibits will focus on key historical events, including the arrival of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. They will also cover his subsequent defeat by local chief Lapulapu. Additionally, they will highlight the Hispanic heritage of the Manila Galleon trade.

The museum’s curator, Dannie Alvarez of the Alliance of Greater Manila Museums, has designed an extensive collection that visually narrates these significant events. Visitors can expect to see artifacts, replicas, and interactive displays spread across five main galleries on the second floor. These galleries will cover Spain’s quest for spices, the ancient Kingdom of Sugbu, Magellan’s expeditions, the Battle of Mactan, and other pivotal moments in Filipino history.

Life-size monuments of key figures, such as Lapulapu, King Philip II of Spain, and Ferdinand Magellan, will add to the museum’s grandeur. These monuments will be strategically placed around the building. The museum will include two performance halls that can be combined into a larger venue. This setup will allow for accommodations of up to 270 people for Spanish dance shows and plays.

An immersive audio-visual hall recreates historical events from the Spanish era, offering visitors a multisensory experience. Additionally, the museum will host various activities that celebrate Filipino-Spanish traditions and culture. These include a seasonal bazaar featuring Cebu’s signature delicacies, a guitar-making and retail area, and a self-operated Filipino-themed photo studio.

Megaworld’s Fourth Museum Project

The Mactan World Museum is Megaworld‘s fourth museum project within its township developments. The company has previously established the Chinatown Museum in Lucky Chinatown, the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Brandy Museum in Iloilo Business Park.

Set to focus on Filipino-Spanish heritage, the Mactan World Museum is building a grand-scale addition to Cebu’s cultural landscape. It will offer history buffs and tourists alike an engaging and educational experience. The museum’s completion in 2027 will mark a new chapter in the celebration of the Philippines’ rich and diverse history.
