Bong Go
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go was honored with the Jinseo Arigato “Champion of Life Hero of the Year” award in Nagoya, Japan, on Sunday, May 26.

This prestigious award acknowledges his unwavering dedication to improving healthcare access, protecting overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), and supporting the welfare of the film industry.

Known as “Mr. Malasakit” for his compassionate public service, Go humbly accepted the award. “With or without an award, I am grateful and honored to always serve the Filipino people. Service to people is service to God,” he said in his acceptance speech. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve his fellow Filipinos, emphasizing his commitment to their welfare.

The award was presented by Philippine Consul General in Nagoya, Roy B. Ecraela, at the Jinseo Arigato International Film Festival Awards Night. This event celebrated the collaboration between the Philippines and Japan, particularly highlighting the achievements of Filipino filmmakers. Go assured his full support for the film industry, recognizing the cultural value and potential it holds both locally and internationally.

Bong Go highlighted his efforts in protecting OFWs, mentioning the establishment of the Department of Migrant Workers through Republic Act No. 11641. This law underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Filipino migrant workers. He also urged Philippine embassies and consulates to be available “24/7” for Filipinos abroad, ensuring they have support whenever needed.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Public Information, Go is advocating for Senate Bill No. 1183, the “Media and Entertainment Workers Welfare Act.” This bill aims to provide enhanced protection, security, and incentives for media workers, including additional health insurance, hazard pay, and other benefits.

Bong Go also supports the film industry through his role on the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Executive Committee. He proposed the Metro Manila Summer Film Festival to provide a second yearly platform for showcasing Filipino films, further promoting local talent.

Go’s commitment to healthcare is evident through the establishment of Malasakit Centers, the creation of more Super Health Centers nationwide, and the enactment of the Regional Specialty Centers Act. These initiatives aim to bring medical services closer to underprivileged and remote areas, ensuring accessible healthcare for all Filipinos.

In his closing remarks, Go reflected on the transient nature of life and the importance of doing good: “We only pass through this world once… Whatever good we can do for others, we should do it now because we will not pass this way again.” He reaffirmed his dedication to serving the Filipino people to the best of his ability.
