Empowering Baler: DICT’s ASCEND Initiative and Digital Freelancing Growth

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is urging residents of Baler to explore the opportunities in online freelancing for better income prospects.

This initiative was highlighted during the ASCEND: Digital Workers to Digital Agency Owners learning sessions, which saw participation from around 50 students, content creators, digital professionals, and aspiring freelancers.

Empowering Digital Workers in Baler

In a video message, DICT Undersecretary for ICT Development, Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to fostering online freelancing across the Philippines. She emphasized the role of the Empowering Digital Workers of the Gig Industry Ecosystem in the Philippines (EDGE) Program in supporting the growth of the gig economy and enhancing the competitiveness of Filipino freelancers.

“Through the EDGE Program, DICT aims to sustain the growth of the gig economy and enhance the competitiveness of Filipino online freelancers,” Batapa-Sigue stated.

She also encouraged Baler’s digital workers to leverage the ASCEND learning sessions to develop, advance, and compete in the global market. The sessions provided insights on improving competitiveness and building domestic Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies.

The event featured key speakers who shared their expertise and experiences in the digital freelancing industry:

  • Ruben Licera of Licera Growth Marketing: Ruben Licera discussed strategies for digital marketing and growth. He provides valuable tips on how to expand one’s reach and impact in the online space.
  • Melanie Santiago of Taxumo: Santiago highlighted the importance of financial management for freelancers. She offers advice on tax compliance and financial planning.
  • Marjorie Aviso of TeleWorkPH: Aviso shared insights on remote work best practices and how to manage virtual teams effectively.
  • Pam Mariano-Baluyo of Scale Experts: Mariano-Baluyo spoke about scaling freelance businesses into full-fledged digital agencies, providing a roadmap for growth.
  • Genesis Reonico of Path Digital Solutions: Reonico emphasized the significance of digital transformation and how freelancers can adapt to the evolving digital landscape.

A Thriving Community of Remote Workers

Baler, with its growing community of remote workers, served as an ideal host for the ASCEND learning sessions. This event marked a significant opportunity for the municipality’s talent pool to transition into the digital freelancing landscape. It allowed them to embrace the possibilities within this growing sector.

“With a growing community of remote workers, Baler is an ideal locale for hosting the ASCEND learning sessions. This event is really the municipality’s entry point to this opportunity. I hope that the municipality’s talent pool will step up, transition, and embrace the opportunities that are before you through this initiative,” Batapa-Sigue emphasized.

The event featured inspiring testimonials from successful online freelancers who transitioned into entrepreneurship. Tiara Mejos, one of the participants, expressed her gratitude to DICT for providing valuable opportunities. She was inspired to advance in the digital business sector.

“It was a good workshop and I learned a lot. Always good to hear from people who are successful in their fields,” Mejos shared.

DICT’s Continued Support for Online Freelancing

Since 2017, DICT has been promoting online freelancing through various programs. These include Rural Impact Sourcing, Digital Jobs Training, and freelancing opportunities through the EDGE PH initiative. These programs aim to empower individuals in rural areas by providing them with essential skills. They also offer opportunities needed to thrive in the digital economy.

DICT’s encouragement for Baler residents to consider online freelancing aligns with the broader goal of enhancing digital literacy. It also aims to increase economic opportunities across the Philippines. By leveraging initiatives like the ASCEND learning sessions and the EDGE Program, DICT continues to support the growth and development of Filipino freelancers.
