UP Concert Chorus Triumphs at Musica Orbis Prague Festival 2024

In their debut appearance at the Musica Orbis Prague Festival 2024 held from June 27 to July 1, the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus (UPCC), fondly known as Korus, made an indelible mark by clinching four prestigious awards.

UPCC, the first Filipino group to participate in the festival’s fifth edition, stood out among choral groups from 16 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America.

UPCC garnered multiple accolades, including:

  • Gold Prize and Overall Winner in the Unrestricted Category (Mixed Adult Choir) for stellar performances of:
    • “Laudate Dominum (Psalm 117)” by Fidel Calalang Jr.
    • “Bagong Umaga” by Mike Villegas and Bayang Barrios (arranged by Joel Cruz)
    • “Wade in the Water” arranged by Moses Hogan
  • Gold Prize in the Folklore Category (Mixed Adult Choir) for their enchanting renditions of:
    • “Ilay Gandangan (Worship of the Sun)” arranged by Rodolfo Boy Delarmente
    • “Malinac Lay Labi (Peaceful Night)” arranged by Joy Nilo
    • “Tuksuhan” (Teasing) arranged by National Artist for Music Dr. Ramon P. Santos
    • “Mga Wata Sa Ripag (Children of Ripag)” by Arwin Tan

Additionally, UPCC received the Special Prize for Best Stage Performance for their signature “choreocapella” style, blending choreographed movements with a capella singing.

Acclaim and Reflections on a Global Stage

John Tregellas, Founder of the Musica Orbis Prague Festival, praised UPCC’s exceptional musical standard and vocal quality, highlighting their captivating stage presence and versatility in both serious compositions and theatrically choreographed pieces.

Professor Janet “Jai” Sabas-Aracama, UPCC’s Conductor and Artistic Director, emphasized the unique artistry of combining dance with music, noting the ensemble’s seamless ability to enhance their performances through movement.

The Musica Orbis Prague Festival marked the sixth stop in UPCC’s MusiKADASIG 25th International Goodwill Cultural Concert Tour. Before Prague, UPCC performed in various European cities, including The Hague, Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, and Brno, showcasing Filipino cultural excellence and musical prowess on a global stage.

Reflecting on their journey, UPCC members, many of whom trained via Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic, shared their growth in musical collaboration and the production of original compositions and digital albums.
