Actor Joshua Garcia is set to make his debut as a voice actor in the Filipino dub of “Inside Out 2,” the highly anticipated sequel to Pixar’s 2015 hit.

The film, which will be released on Disney+ later this month, marks the first time the streaming giant has offered a Filipino-dubbed version of a Pixar movie.

Joshua will lend his voice to Lance Slashblade, a minor but memorable character in the film. Slashblade, a dramatic anime-inspired hero, appears when some of the core emotions encounter him in Riley’s memory vault. YouTuber and voice actor Yong Yea originally voiced Slashblade, adding action and flair to the film. Joshua’s interpretation will now infuse the character with a distinct Filipino flavor.

At a recent media event held at Shangri-La at the Fort in Taguig, Joshua shared his excitement about being part of the project. A self-proclaimed fan of both Disney-Pixar films and anime, Joshua eagerly embraced the opportunity to try his hand at voice acting. While he admitted to facing challenges during the recording, such as dryness in his mouth, he quickly adapted to the process, likening it to running a machine that just needed fine-tuning.

In describing his role, Joshua revealed, “‘Yung character ko rito makata, ang lalim ng Tagalog, parang nasa play! Laki ng emotion, doon ako na-challenge.” He highlighted the unique experience of voicing a character that speaks in deep, poetic Filipino, something quite different from his usual roles.

Joshua Garcia on the Art of Voice Acting

Reflecting on the voice acting experience, Joshua expressed newfound admiration for voice actors. He explained that while it’s still a form of acting, it allows for deeper exploration of talent. “Ibang experience talaga siya from ikaw ang mag-a-act,” Joshua said, underscoring how the project helped broaden his understanding of the art of performance. He praised the craft of voice actors and credited the experience with expanding his skills as an actor.

When asked which character he would like to voice in the future, Joshua playfully mentioned Anger, noting that while he’s not particularly angry in real life, the character’s intensity and his own deep voice would be a good match.

A Landmark for Filipino Dubs on Disney+

“Inside Out 2” is not only breaking box office records globally but is also making history in the Philippines. The Filipino dub of the film signifies a growing effort by Disney+ to cater to local audiences. The film has already become the second-highest-grossing animated movie and the fourth-highest-grossing film overall in the country, underscoring its massive appeal.

Globally, “Inside Out 2” has already overtaken “Frozen 2” as the highest-grossing animated film of all time, making it the biggest box office hit of 2024. For Joshua Garcia, being part of such a record-breaking film not only enhances his career but also represents an exciting opportunity for Filipino actors to engage with global productions.

Joshua hinted at being open to more voice acting projects in the future, even joking with Disney Philippines representatives present at the event about potential upcoming opportunities.

As the film prepares to drop on Disney+ with its groundbreaking Filipino dub, fans can look forward to hearing Joshua’s performance as Lance Slashblade, marking an important milestone in the local entertainment industry and expanding the reach of Filipino talent to global platforms.
