September 9 is celebrated in the Philippines as Osmeña Day. No work and no school in Cebu province including Cebu City.
It is a special working public holiday in the whole nation.
In remembrance of the late Governor of Cebu, the 2nd President of the Commonwealth Republic, and the 4th President of the Republic of the Philippines, Sergio Osmeña, Sr., today, September 9, is being celebrated to commemorate the late Cebuano politician’s birthday.
The Senior Osmeña can be regarded as the precursor of the well-known political dynasty of the Osmeñas, who have clout not only in the Cebu province but also in the country. With his attainment in the Philippine politics, he deserved a special celebration in the country.
Of course, many would be glad to have no work and no school today in Cebu.
The declaration of making September 9 a special non-working holiday in Cebu and special working holiday for the rest of the country was made official through the Republic Act 6953 on May 20, 1990.
For those who are working today, there will be extra pay for Cebu laborers.
